At approximately 9:00am on Friday, January 9th, 1976 an armed man came into North Side Liquor located at 1613 Buchanan Street and approached William Stone who was behind the counter and told him to give him the money. Stone told him he didn’t have any and shortly after the man fired his gun several times. A part owner of the store was in the back room during this time and attempted to call the police but the phone was off the hook by Stone. He next grabbed a gun he had in his desk and exited the office and fired at the gunman. The two men fired at each other and the man retreated to his office while the gunman exited the store. Once the gunman was gone, he went to Stone and activated the alarm and called the police. Stone had been shot and was transported to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries. The suspect was described as a young black male in his 20s with a round face, short to medium afro, medium to stocky build approximately 5’8” tall and wearing a gray and white plaid jacket. William Stone was 65 years old at the time of his death.
