About the MNPD Cold Case Homicide Unit:

The Cold Case Homicide Unit is comprised of two supervisors, five highly experienced Cold Case Homicide Investigators, and two Missing Persons Investigators. The Cold Case Homicide Unit is responsible for the investigation of cold case homicides, high profile homicides, officer involved shootings, in-custody deaths, and kidnappings. Cold Case Homicide Investigators are all members of the International Homicide Investigators Association (IHIA) and other professional organizations. Cold Case Homicide Investigators regularly participate in ongoing education to maintain a high level of proficiency and learn about new trends and technology which may help solve existing investigations.

The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department considers any unsolved homicide that is no less than one year old, and without any viable leads, to be a cold case; however, many homicides are not considered “cold” for well over the one-year mark. A cold case will be re-assigned to the Cold Case Homicide Unit only after going through a rigorous case review process. To reach this point, the Police Department continuously evaluates each homicide through ongoing direct supervisory case management, peer reviews of homicides between Homicide and Cold Case supervisors, networking with federal law enforcement partners, consultation with District Attorney’s Office, thorough laboratory analyses, and formal case reviews conducted by the Cold Case Homicide Unit.

It is very important to note that all homicides will always remain to be open investigations and will never be closed until they are solved, though some investigations may be more active than others. Investigations become more active as new information or evidence becomes available. Reviews of cold cases are also conducted to determine if additional leads or evidence could be further developed and pursued. Cold Case Detectives are always searching for new strategies or technology that may help produce viable leads.

GOAL:

The goals of this website are as follows: To preserve the memory of those who have tragically lost their lives by violence and to aid in the search of missing persons, thus bringing visibility to their cases. The objectives of our work are to bring those responsible for these acts of violence to justice and to bring about a resolution for the families of both homicide victims and missing persons. We believe there are people in our community who have information that can help solve these cases. We hope that someone looking at these cases will decide to come forward and help us seek justice. We will always maintain hope that each and every case will be solved. To that end, the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department is making a plea for anyone to come forward who may hold information that may help solve any of these homicides and missing person cases.
