Shortly before 8:00pm on Sunday, October 13th, 1974, Wardell Mullins reported to work at Smiling Circle Market located at 711 W. Trinity Lane where he was part owner. At approximately 9:00pm there was a shooting in the market that resulted in Mullins being fatally struck. Mullins had returned fire. He was transported to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries the next morning on Monday, October 14, 1974. Wardell Mullins was 57 years old at the time of his death.
