At approximately 5:30pm on Friday, December 30, 2016, officers responded to a report of gunshots at the Chimney Top Apartments at 289 Chimney Top Drive. When they arrived at the scene, they discovered Trel Ahviante Gates lying on the ground in a breezeway near apartment 295. Prior to the shooting, Gates had left the apartment, appearing agitated, and moved his car to the street. He then exited the vehicle and headed back toward the apartment. Multiple gunshots were heard but there were no witnesses to the shooting. Gates had been shot multiple times and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Trel Ahviante Gates was 23 years old at the time of his death.
