On Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011, at approximately 2:00pm, Darrel Steinback pulled up to 609 S. 9th St. with his friend, Ms. Crawford, to pick up her brother. As they were waiting, a black man in a ski mask came up to Steinbeck in the passenger seat and demanded he “give it up.” The man opened the door and struggled with Steinback. During the struggle, Steinback was shot. The shooter went through Steinback’s pockets before fleeing on foot. Darrel Steinback was 69 years old at the time of his death.
