On Saturday, March 19, 2005, at around 4:30am, Robert Laverne Williamson was on his way to work driving a tan 4-door 1980 Cadillac DeVille on Ellington Parkway when a light blue car or SUV with tinted windows pulled up next to him, just past the Cleveland Street exit, and started shooting. Williamson was struck by the gunfire as he drove, losing control of his vehicle near Spring Street where his car went up onto the median and came to a stop. Officers arrived on the scene and discovered him trapped in his vehicle which had caught on fire upon impact with a guardrail. During the rescue Williamson sustained burns and responding officers also sustained injuries from the fire as they worked to free Williamson from the vehicle. Williamson was rescued from the vehicle and transported to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries on the morning of Thursday, March 24th. Robert Laverne Williamson was 48 years old at the time of his death.
