Just after noon on Thursday, November 5th, 1987, John R. Jernigan was found lying on his living room floor located at 1724 St. Louis Ave. by his 17 year old neighbor who was stopping by to run an errand for Jernigan. After not receiving a response from Jernigan when he knocked on the door, the neighbor noticed a side door was open that had previously been nailed shut. The neighbor looked in and saw Jernigan, then immediately went to call an ambulance. When police arrived, they discovered the door had been kicked open and Jernigan had been fatally shot. Jernigan had been at Ed’s Fish and Pizza eating that morning around 9:00am and had been shot sometime between returning home from eating and when his neighbor found him shortly after noon. John R. Jernigan was 68 years old at the time of his death.
